The Area of Pasadena, Texas
With a population of around 150,000 people, Pasadena is the second largest city in Harris County. The area itself has been inhabited for hundreds of years, first by the Karankawa and Atakapan tribes, colonies were started there in the early 19th century.
Texas revolted against Mexican rule in 1835, and the final battle of the revolution took place at Vince’s Bayou, a river that runs through Pasadena. Because of this, Pasadena took the nickname, “Birthplace of Texas”.
Modern Pasadena is supported by employment in businesses relating to the oil and energy industries (including petroleum refining and the manufacture of solar panels), while many people are employed in the maritime shipping sector and by NASA.
The largest individual employer is the school system, with the area served by the University of Houston-Clear Lake and several colleges, as well as schools for younger students.
